Microsoft Announces Power Cord Replacement for Xbox

REDMOND, Wash. — Feb. 17, 2005 — As a precautionary measure and out of concern for consumer safety, Microsoft Corp. today announced that it will voluntarily replace the power cords on 14.1 million Xbox® consoles worldwide.
The replacement power cords are designed to protect consumers and their Xbox consoles from rare electrical component failures that can pose a fire hazard. Fewer than one in 10,000 consoles have experienced these component failures, and, in almost all instances, any damage caused by these failures was contained within the console itself or limited to the tip of the power cord at the back of the console.

However, in 30 consoles worldwide, these failures are reported to have caused minor injury or minor property damage. In seven instances, customers reported sustaining a minor burn to their hand. In 23 instances, customers reported smoke damage, or minor damage to a carpet or entertainment center.

In all regions except Continental Europe, Xbox consoles manufactured before Oct. 23, 2003, require a replacement power cord. In Continental Europe, consoles manufactured before Jan. 13, 2004, require a replacement power cord.

“This is a preventative step we’re choosing to take despite the rarity of these incidents,” said Robbie Bach, senior vice president of the Home & Entertainment Division at Microsoft. “We regret the inconvenience, but believe offering consumers a free replacement is the responsible thing to do.”
To order a replacement cord, consumers should go to http://www.xbox.com and click on the Power Cord Replacement for Xbox link. Replacement cords will arrive two to four weeks after the order is placed. While waiting for the new cord to arrive, consumers should turn off their Xbox consoles when not in use.

Customers who cannot access the World Wide Web should contact Microsoft at the appropriate toll-free number listed here:

Halo 2 First-Day Sales … $125 Million!

November 10, 2004—Halo® 2 broke entertainment retail records in its first 24 hours on store shelves.  Microsoft Game Studios today announced that the highly anticipated game sold through 2.4-million units in the U.S. and Canada, driving cash register receipts to the $125-million mark.

“EB Games had a record-breaking day as gamers across the country lined up for hours to be one of the first to get their hands on Halo 2 on November 9,” said Jeff Griffiths, president and CEO of EB Games. “The Halo 2 frenzy, anticipation, and excitement felt throughout the country prove that Halo 2 has become more than a game—it’s a pop-cultural phenomenon.”

"Halo 2 has blown the roof off of any other sales day in the history of GameStop,” said Dan Dematteo, president and chief operating officer at GameStop. “In just one day, we sold more than half a million copies of Halo 2—more than any other game in history in its first day of release. Halo 2 has become more than a pop-culture phenomenon. It's become a pop-culture frenzy."

Halo 2 has not only exceeded videogame sales records, but has also exceeded entertainment records. Halo 2 has generated more money on day one than any of the biggest movies in box office history, including Spider-Man 2 (Sony), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (WB), and The Matrix Reloaded (WB).* In addition, Halo 2 surpassed this past weekend’s box-office favorite, The Incredibles, which grossed $70.5 million (U.S.) in three days compared to the $125 million pulled through by Halo 2 in one day.

"The first 24 hours of Halo 2 sales have taken our breath away," said Peter Moore, corporate vice president, Worldwide Marketing and Publishing, Xbox. "Across North America, 2.4-million copies of the game were sold, representing $125 million in total cash register receipts for retailers. It's no longer just a huge game for us, but has become a seminal milestone for the entire industry."

'Tis the Season for Xbox and Halo 2

December 2, 2004—Kicking off the start of the frenzied holiday shopping season, retailers welcomed hordes of Xbox consumers over Thanksgiving weekend. Gamers flocked to purchase the Xbox® video game system, Xbox Live™ subscriptions, and Xbox games, not the least of which was the blockbuster Halo® 2.

Transcending borders, Xbox gamers around the globe also continued to devour copies of Halo 2, which has now sold more than 5-million copies worldwide since its launch on November 9, 2004. In fact, the Halo franchise has exceeded the 11-million unit mark, with cumulative sales from Halo®: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, and Halo® for Windows.

Xbox consoles are proving to be hot purchase items at retailers this holiday. Console sales in the United States increased nearly 50-percent in sales this week, when compared to Thanksgiving week last year. Holiday shoppers continue to recognize the unrivaled entertainment experience and incredible value of the Xbox console.

“Xbox and Halo 2 are on most consumers’ must-have lists this holiday season,” said Robert McKenzie, vice president of merchandising, Gamestop. “The popularity of both the Xbox console and its number-one title, Halo 2, is an early indication that Xbox will enjoy a stellar holiday season.”

The Xbox Live community has logged a record-setting 28-million hours playing Halo 2, which is more than any other Xbox Live game in the two-year history of the global service.

The instant action and immersive gameplay in Halo 2 propelled gamers to play online for an average of 91-minutes per session, approximately the same length as a major motion picture. Out of a universe of more than one-million Xbox Live members, Halo 2 on Xbox Live has already attracted more than 900,000 unique users.

In addition to the Halo 2 phenomenon, Xbox is satiating the entertainment appetites of adults and children, of all ages and personalities. Fable™, the groundbreaking Xbox roleplaying adventure game from Lionhead Studios and Microsoft Game Studios has reached new heights, racking sales of more than one-million units worldwide in only two months since its availability at retail. Other great games for the entire family include the Platinum Hits series, with seven new offerings at a tremendous value of $19.99, including Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six® 3 from Ubisoft and NFL Street from Electronic Arts.

Xbox is also reaching new consumers with the launch of Xbox Live Arcade on November 4, 2004, introducing a new social experience for gamers of every level with popular retro classics and broad appeal games like Dig Dug, Bejeweled, and the fully Xbox Live-enabled Fuzzee Fever directly to Xbox over the Xbox Live service.

In North America, holiday shoppers can purchase the Xbox console, two full premium sports games (NCAA® Football 2005 from EA SPORTS and Top Spin™ from Microsoft Game Studios), and a two-month trial subscription to Xbox Live for just $149.99.

“This year’s holiday offer provides something for everyone in the family and is a great value for Xbox consumers,” said Mitch Koch, vice president, worldwide retail sales and marketing for Microsoft’s home AND entertainment division. “With the combined value of the Xbox console and two great games, the retail offer opens the door for new and old customers alike.”

  • Puzzle & Trivia: Strain your brain with games like Bejeweled, Zuma, Hexic, Fuzzee Fever, and Mahjong

  • Retro Arcade: This genre includes classic arcade titles such as Dig Dug, Pole Position, Galaga, Joust, Defender, Robotron, and Gauntlet, from publishing partners such as Namco Ltd. and Midway Games Inc. Retro arcade titles are true to the originally designed games for coin-operated machines.
  • Social Sports: These are games that you would play with a group of friends on a Friday night while hanging out, such as bowling, billiards, and golf.

Xbox Live Arcade will introduce additional games every month.  From the comfort of your family room, you will now have instant access to new content and original games on an ongoing basis.
